Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Publish Date: May  8, 2012

Mackenzie and Amy were best friends. Until Amy was brutally murdered.

Since then, Mac’s life has been turned upside down. She is being haunted by Amy in her dreams, and an extremist group called the Trackers has come to Mac’s hometown of Hemlock to hunt down Amy’s killer: A white werewolf.

Lupine syndrome—also known as the werewolf virus—is on the rise across the country. Many of the infected try to hide their symptoms, but bloodlust is not easy to control.

Wanting desperately to put an end to her nightmares, Mac decides to investigate Amy’s murder herself. She discovers secrets lurking in the shadows of Hemlock, secrets about Amy’s boyfriend, Jason, her good pal Kyle, and especially her late best friend. Mac is thrown into a maelstrom of violence and betrayal that puts her life at risk.

Kathleen Peacock’s thrilling novel is the first in the Hemlock trilogy, a spellbinding urban fantasy series filled with provocative questions about prejudice, trust, lies, and love. (Goodreads)

This sounds like a great, creepy mystery! It’s been on my TBR list for a while. I hope to read it soon!

Have you seen any good book trailers recently?

Until I Die by Amy PlumUntil I Die (Revenants #2) by Amy Plum

Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: May 8, 2012
Format: Advance Reader Copy
Source: Publisher
Genre: YA, Paranormal, Romance
Buy: Barnes & Noble | IndieboundAmazon

Kate and Vincent have overcome the odds and at last they are together in Paris, the city of lights and love.

As their romance deepens there’s one question they can’t ignore: How are they supposed to be together if Vincent can’t resist sacrificing himself to save others? Although Vincent promises that he’ll do whatever it takes to lead a normal life with Kate, will that mean letting innocent people die? When a new and surprising enemy reveals itself, Kate realizes that even more may be at stake—and that Vincent’s immortality is in jeopardy.

In Die for Me, Amy Plum created a captivating paranormal mythology with immortal revenants and a lush Paris setting. Until I Die is poised to thrill readers with more heart-pounding suspense, spellbinding romance, and a cliff-hanger ending that will leave them desperate for the third and final novel in the series. (Goodreads)

I really enjoyed this sequel to Die For Me! I’m now a big fan of revenants, which I had never heard of before this series. I’m fascinated by Plum’s revenant mythology, so I loved learning more about them in this installment.

In Until I Die, Kate and Vincent are desperate to find a way to make their relationship work. Kate is realistic about their relationship in the long term, and they’re both trying to find a solution that will make it easier for Vincent to live, and age, normally with Kate. Meanwhile the Numa have a new leader, and the revenants are waiting for them to retaliate… so the Numa are a constant threat.

I thought Until I Die was a bit slow to start, but really, I loved being back with these characters in the fantastic setting of Paris! The romance between Kate and Vincent is upped a notch, and I really like them as characters – individually and together. I love the kindred, and how they’re a family. Jules, Ambrose, and Charlotte are my favorite… and I missed not seeing more of Charlotte in this one. Plum fleshed-out all the characters, while introducing us to new ones, and I loved the dynamics between them all!

Until I Die is full of romance with slow building suspense, and a cliffhanger ending I never saw coming… I can’t wait for the conclusion, If I Should Die! I’ve already posted the Paris book trailer for Until I Die, but I love it so much I’m going to post it below, again.

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

The week’s WoW feature is:

Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Expected publication: June 12, 2012

Generations ago, a genetic experiment gone wrong—the Reduction—decimated humanity, giving rise to a Luddite nobility who outlawed most technology.

Elliot North has always known her place in this world. Four years ago Elliot refused to run away with her childhood sweetheart, the servant Kai, choosing duty to her family’s estate over love. Since then the world has changed: a new class of Post-Reductionists is jumpstarting the wheel of progress, and Elliot’s estate is foundering, forcing her to rent land to the mysterious Cloud Fleet, a group of shipbuilders that includes renowned explorer Captain Malakai Wentforth—an almost unrecognizable Kai. And while Elliot wonders if this could be their second chance, Kai seems determined to show Elliot exactly what she gave up when she let him go.

But Elliot soon discovers her old friend carries a secret—one that could change their society . . . or bring it to its knees. And again, she’s faced with a choice: cling to what she’s been raised to believe, or cast her lot with the only boy she’s ever loved, even if she’s lost him forever.

Inspired by Jane Austen’s persuasion, For Darkness Shows the Stars is a breathtaking romance about opening your mind to the future and your heart to the one person you know can break it. (Goodreads)

AUGH! This books sounds amazing! I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this at ALA MW and I hope to devour it soon… Possibly later this week as part of the Bout of Books Read-A-Thon!

What book are you anxiously waiting for this week?

Please help me welcome Kim Purcell, debut author of Trafficked! She’s stopping by today to discuss how the a language barrier can be it’s own kind of prison.

Trafficked

But her American dream quickly spirals into a nightmare. The Platonovs force Hannah to work sixteen-hour days, won’t let her leave the house, and seem to have a lot of secrets—from Hannah and from each other.

No English, A Different Kind of Prison

by Kim Purcell

When I was researching TRAFFICKED, what struck me is that in every case of modern-day slavery, the girls could have walked ten feet to the neighbor’s house, but they didn’t. They feared what the traffickers would do to them and they usually didn’t speak English well enough to explain what was happening to them.

I used to teach English as a Second Language to young adults, both rich and poor. Most of them were terrified to speak English to Americans, especially if they came from a poorer background. They chose to stick with people from their own countries because they didn’t want to make mistakes. They feared being ridiculed. They didn’t want to feel stupid.

Even when someone starts to speak the language at an intermediate level, their lives are filled with misunderstandings. One time a Korean student came to class furious because he was sending a package at a Boxes Etc store and the young worker was swearing to him about another customer. I explained the worker was trying to connect with him, as he would with a friend, and that sometimes people swear to show someone that they think they’re cool. The incident made him feel more reluctant to speak with Americans because he was sure he’d make a mistake.

Being in a place where you don’t speak the language can be scary. You get lost and you can’t find your way home. You can’t order food. You can’t ask the police for help. I’ve traveled in many countries in Asia, Europe and Central America, but usually, I spoke the language. When I didn’t, I messed up.

After college, I went to Korea to teach English as a Second Language to elementary school kids. In the beginning, I had numerous misunderstandings because I didn’t speak the language. Two days after I arrived, a taxi driver dropped me off at the wrong apartment at 5 AM, coming home from a nightclub. I kept getting in taxis and they kept dropping me off at the same spot. It was like Groundhog Day. Apparently, two apartments had the same name in that neighborhood and they didn’t have addresses the way we do. Another time, a taxi driver wanted more money. I didn’t understand and he chased me down the street. I put the money on the sidewalk, too scared to hand it to him directly, but then he threw it at me. I had no way of sorting out problems because I didn’t speak Korean.

Often, modern day slaves don’t speak English and they’re terrified to try with people who could report them to police or say something to the traffickers without realizing it. And yet they live in ordinary neighborhoods. Right now, there could be someone living as a slave next door to you and you’d have no idea because they wouldn’t tell you.

After people read TRAFFICKED, they often ask me what they can do. My hope is that people will start to look around their neighborhoods and become aware of people who seem afraid to speak to them. I hope they’ll try to talk to them. In the best case, they’ll be helping someone learn English and making a friend. In the worst case, they’ll find a modern-day slave.

Author Bio (the short version, from her website):
I grew up in a small town. It wasn’t right for me, so I left. I went to university, got married and moved to LA. I wrote two novels before TRAFFICKED. I had two kids. We all moved to New York, which I love. In my spare time, I’m a swimmer and a runner and a yogi. I dance in elevators and change rooms. I laugh a lot and sometimes I yell.

Many thanks to Kim for stopping by today! I’ll definitely be more aware about people around me, and if they’re afraid to speak to me.

My Reviews: WATERFALL (#1) | CASCADE (#2) | TORRENT (#3) | BOURNE (#3.1)

Are you ready for the reveal?!

The cover features Luca, are you sure you want to see it?

OK, OK! Here it is!

Tributary by Lisa T. Bergren

Publisher: David C. Cook
Expected Release: Mid-to-Late June 2012

Exclusive Excerpt

(Subject to change post-editing)

“Honestly, Rodolfo,” Lia said with a sigh behind Alexandria. “She’s not a soldier. She’s our guest.” Alexandria could hear her nock another arrow and then the rustle of it slicing into the tightly tied haystack at the end. She was trying to cajole him out of his dark fury. Show him that she trusted Alexandria and he should too.

“She’s a huntress. What makes you think that she doesn’t have hunting one of the Ladies Betarrini in mind?”

“Tell Celso to draw his sword. And if I do anything out of order, strike me down.”

Greco stared down at her, his face inches from her. “I shall.”

“Good.”

“Good.” With that, he allowed her to wrench her bow away, and she turned back toward Evangelia, hating that she trembled now.

Well, what do you think?! I really like the model that was chosen for Luca, and the cover fits in perfectly with the other books in the series. I love that we get a glimpse of Lia, Rodolfo and Alexandria in the excerpt! I can NOT wait to hang out with these characters and the rest of the gang again :) .

TRIBUTARY is scheduled to come out in mid-to-late June (YAY!!!!), and you can find out the latest on it at Lisa Bergren’s website! The River of Time Series is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords.

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon

I’m a bit behind on my reading, so when I heard about the Bout of Books Read-A-Thon 4.0 I thought this may be a great way to play catch-up! This read-a-thon starts tomorrow, Monday, and goes through Sunday. I used the template (see below) given over on Bout of Book’s “How do I sign-up” page, check it out for full details, and to sign up yourself! What attracted me to this particular read-a-thon is that it’s not as competitive as other ones I’ve signed up for… I’m not a fast reader (sadly) so this one sounds perfect for me. Also, I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to participate in challenges and whatnot, but I hope to meet and network with other bloggers/readers through the #boutofbooks hashtag on Twitter :) . You can learn all about this “low pressure” read-a-thon on their about page, and don’t forget to check out the schedule.

My Goals:

  • Finish my current book, Until I Die by Amy Plum. I’m only a couple of chapters into this one so far…
  • Finish my current listen, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, narrated by Wil Wheaton. I realize an audiobook doesn’t count, but I still want to make it one of my goals even if I don’t count it toward my read-a-thon stats. I asked, audiobooks count!
  • Start and finish at least 3 other books.

Books To Read:

I’m hesitant to list the books I plan to read… only because once I feel like I “have” to read a book, I suddenly want to read anything but that book. My eyes tend to start straying to other titles. But, it’s good to have goals, so mine are listed below. I can’t promise to stick with these though, because it’ll only slow me down!

Until I Die by Amy Plum
