TGIF

TGIF is a weekly meme hosted by Ginger over at GReads! It’s a fun way to end the week by recapping posts and answering her question of the week.

This Friday’s question is:

Reading Blues: We all get them from time to time. What helps you overcome those reading slumps when nothing seems to grab your attention?

This is hard to answer right now because I currently have a case of the blues! Sadly, I’ve been in this reading slump for about a week. I just can’t seem to settle on a book, and nothing really sounds good. *GASP* I know… I have an overflowing shelf of books to read (not to mention my Kindle books/eARCs), many that I’m really excited about… but I feel restless.  I’m coming off a huge book high after reading so many books (a lot for me anyway, with several amazing ones in that mix) within a short period of time. The worst part is that I have review books that I need to start reading, but I don’t think it’s fair to read a review book when I’m in this fickle sort mood.

I haven’t had a case of the reading blues in a long time… at least, not a case that lasted this long. Typically when this happens, drastically changing genres will pull me out of my slump, but for some reason it didn’t work this time. It may have to do with feeling guilty about straying from my reading schedule. When I vented to my Twitter peeps, someone suggested I re-read a favorite, so then I decided I’d re-read Divergent by Veronica Roth (a book I LOVED) in prep for Insurgent. However, I haven’t read that much of it because I wanted to finish what I was already reading for a book club, and then I eventually started a review book that I have a deadline for… *sigh*

I know this will pass, I just wish it would hurry up. In the mean time I do plan to re-read Divergent this weekend and hopefully that will help! I expect to bust out of the blues with the arrival of Insurgent on my doorstep May 1st!

What do you do to get over the reading blues? Any advice?

I usually change genres or skip reading for a night and watch a good movie. Sometimes just declaring a book free, blog free, twitter, facebook, pinterest, google+, klout, tumblr free day works wonders too..i think we get stressed with ARC’s and networking that a day off..refuels us and the funk passes. Wonderful post..l think it’s good to let others know it happens to all of us.

I know, it’s just a bit much sometimes (all the social media + amount of books + reading + reviews/blogging). I love that Ginger picked this topic for this week, since I was in a slump. Seeing everyone’s responses makes me feel better. We all go through this!

Sometimes I get overwhelmed by how many books I have on my shelf and Kindle and that leads to a reading slump because I just can’t decide what to read next!

Re-reading a favorite always helps me overcome a reading slump. Most of the time I won’t re-read a whole book, but rather my favorite parts of it. Re-reading is a good way to remind myself why I love to read!

Aww, that’s too bad! I hate reading slumps. I usually only get them when I’m reading something boring, which is why I read multiple books at once. If they’re all boring, I’m screwed.

When I do get in one, I usually give myself a day to do NO READING. I had one of those days a couple weeks back, and I just watched a marathon of tv shows.

  4. Reading slumps suck. I know how you feel. Hopefully Divergent will get you back into it. Old follower.

I’ve discovered that switching genres helps me a lot. I’ve been a bit burned out on fantasy type books so I’m trying to read other things (maybe some historical fiction?). Give it a shot!

Hope you get out of your slump soon, Jen! Have a good weekend.

Switching genres usually works for me too, but not this time. I think I’ve finally snapped out of it! I alternated between re-reading Divergent and a review book, The Summer My Life Began which is a really light fun beach read that ended up being exactly what I needed to get rid of the Blues!

I read funny books when I’m in a reading slump. Megan Meade’s Guide to the McGowan Boys (teenage girl goes to live in a house full of boys for a year) or Confessions of Georgia Nicholson (Crazy Brit girl stalks boys into dating her). I’m excited for Insurgent too! I’m hoping to listen to the audio, though.

  7. I totally understand. It seems like Ginger found a ton of us in the blues right now. I am taking a week off but I will be missing out on completing a book club book (for the first time). Now I need to get to review books. Arrghh!! I love taking sometime and eating tons of ice cream. Hheheheee!!

  8. Reading slumps are hard! I haven’t found a sure-fire way to get out of them. Sometimes we just need a break but that is hard to do when you know there are things you want to read!

    Hopefully it ends soon!
