Today’s post for Audiobook Week is a fun question and answer meme. This meme is hosted by Jen at Devourer of Books. Check out her responses and other participants’ linked posts there!

Current/most recent audiobook:

Letters to Elise AudiobookI’m currently listening to Letters to Elise: A Peter Townsend Novella (prequel to My Blood Approves) by Amanda Hocking, which is narrated by Hannah Friedman.

Impressions:

I’m only about 20% into the book, but I’m enjoying it so far! I am a little baffled by the fact that it’s narrated by a woman considering so far it’s told from Peter’s perspective. I’m wondering if the POV changes. I know Hannah Friedman has narrated many of Hocking’s books so maybe that’s why she’s the narrator.

I like Hannah’s voice, and I think she’s performing it well… but I’m still a little thrown by her narrating a book written in the first person from a male’s POV.

Current favorite audiobook:

Ready Player One AudiobookHands down, READY PLAYER ONE by Ernest Cline (linked title goes to my review), which is narrated by Wil Wheaton! Wil is THE perfect narrator for this book.

I had the honor of interviewing Ernie recently, and yesterday I posted the interview in my first ever podcast, though I also transcribed so it can be read too! You should check it out, there’s no spoilers, and he’s awesome :). Plus, I asked him how Wil Wheaton was chosen to narrate his book, and he talks about his history with Wil and why he was his first choice!

Favorite narrator you’ve discovered recently:

I haven’t really discovered any new favorite narrators recently. Possibly Wil Wheaton, he was fantastic for READY PLAYER ONE, and I’m already scoping out the other audiobooks he narrates! Honestly, I don’t always take note unless they are above and beyond outstanding narrators. I can say that it’s been a long time since I’ve listened to a book, and didn’t like the narrator or performance.

My all time favorite narrators are Jim Dale and Jenna Lamia. That said, I just listened to The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern… and I’m worried that listening to the Harry Potter series, multiple times, has ruined Jim Dale as a narrator for any other book (for me). I had a really hard time attaching his voice to new characters. I guess that’s what I get for listening to the series so many times!

One title from your TBL (to be listened) stack, or your audio wishlist:

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened: (A Mostly True Memior) by Jenny Lawson “The Bloggess” is high on my audiobook wish list! I’ve heard it’s hysterical! I own a hardcover copy, but I’m waiting to get my hands on the audiobook!

Your audio dream team (what book or author would you LOVE to see paired with a certain narrator, can already exist or not):

Um. I can’t think of a dream team right now. Augh! I’m lame…

These questions were fun to answer! I’m looking forward to checking out everyone’s answers and adding audiobooks/narrators to my TBL pile :). If you participated in this meme, leave a link in the comments so I can check out your answers.

Happy Audiobook Week!

  1. I have the Stephen Fry version for my Harry Potter books, but I haven’t listened to them yet. Now I want the Jim Dale ones!

Ready Player One was AWESOME! Wil Wheaton was such a wonderful narrator — really made it a book I could listen to over and over again.

I got the chance to interview Ernie Cline last year, although sadly not in person. He really is a cool guy and very gracious.

One of my favorite novels narrated by Wil Wheaton is Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi. I love that book. Fuzzy Nation is also a lot of fun.

I, too, loved Ready Player One in audio. And regarding Jim Dale, I wasn’t able to get into Dave Barry’s Starcatcher series because of that (I kept hearing Hagrid’s voice where it wasn’t supposed to be!). I don’t have a “dream team” of book plus narrator but I would listen to any book that Nick Podehl narrated (The Knife of Never Letting Go and Carter Finally Gets It are two of my favorites).

It’s true, I’ve subconsciously been spacing out the narrators without realizing it so that I’ve never listened to the same narrator do two totally unrelated books back to back. That would throw you off!
