Audiobook Review: The Lonely Hearts Club by Elizabeth Eulberg

The Lonely Hearts Club is a cute and fun read about the awesomeness of female friendships. It’s a feel good book that will have the songs of the Beatles running through your head by the end!

When Penny Lane’s (named after the song) long time friend breaks her heart, she decides to swear off boys and not date for the rest of high school. She names it The Lonely Hearts Club, a club of one, until her close friends decide to join her. When they go to the homecoming dance as each other’s dates and have so much fun together with all the girls, the club quickly grows. The boys aren’t too happy about it, because they can’t get a date.

The group, as expected, struggled with the no dating rule. It was fun to watch the characters deal with this… Especially when Penny may be falling for someone, despite herself and the club she created.

I appreciated how Elizabeth Eulberg gave importance to female friendships, and how friends should support each other and build each other up. I loved that the club promoted going to couple-ish events together, and how they made Saturday nights a set meeting time. Their “meetings” were really just a way to nurture their friendships, show support, and help each other out.

I really enjoyed Khristine Hvam as the narrator! I thought her voice fit with all the characters perfectly. She also seemed to really got into the story herself, which made it fun to listen to.

The Lonely Hearts Club is a fun story with lessons about self-worth, moving on after your heart is broken, and not ditching your friends just because a boy comes along. I recommend this book (audio or physical copy) to all girls!
