Top Ten Most Vivid Worlds/Settings in Books

1. The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
I expect to see this series on everyone’s lists today! Hands down, the world of Harry Potter is one of the best, most vivid worlds in fiction. I dare anyone to say differently!

2. Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor
I loved the world Laini created with the chimaera, and how the doors open to anywhere in the world. I was completely captivated by it being set in Prague with peeks into the world of the chimaera. I wouldn’t compare it to any other world/setting, but personally I haven’t been so enraptured in a world since Harry Potter…

3. The Iron King by Julie Kagawa
I could see and feel the Fey world Kagawa described in The Iron King series, it was so vivid. I’m not a huge fan of Fey stories, but I really appreciated the fantastic world building!

4. The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
Maggie’s descriptions of the island and the sea, were a sensory experience. I could feel the wind, smell the ocean, and taste the salt in the air.

5. River of Time series by Lisa T. Bergren
I love this series and how I feel transported to 14th century Italy each time I open any of the books.

6. Ready Player One by Ernie Cline
Ah, if only I could have my very own OASIS account so I could explore the virtual worlds. There are so many planets I’d visit – Star Wars, The World of Harry Potter, neighborhoods where some of my favorite 80s shows/movies took place…

7. Unbreak My Heart by Melissa Walker
I LOVED that this story took place mostly on a sailboat, and at marinas!

8.  Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
I never thought I’d enjoy a book about the circus so much. I felt that I was traveling with the train circus that Gruen described.

9. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
I loved seeing Paris through Anna’s eyes. I studied abroad just outside of Paris in college so I ate this right up. Never mind that I absolutely love the characters and story!

10. Die For Me by Amy Plum
Paris… I was seriously craving crepes after this book!

I love this! Great post idea–mine would of course be Harry Potter, too 🙂 I’d also have to add the entire Game of Thrones series. The world building is incredible! My story is also based in the circus like Water for Elephants and it’s a huge goal to hopefully build up my world enough to maybe be included in one of these lists someday 😉 Thanks for a fun idea to write later!

  2. Word. I kind of expect every list to have Hogwarts on it as well.

And for reals, I kick myself for forgetting OASIS. Seriously, that is a video game I would LOVE to play, especially where you get to be in the movie, like Monty Python and The Holy Grail. I would be awesome at that game.

  6. Yay for Anna and Etienne’s Paris! I’m going to be thinking of them when we go this fall!

I am expecting to see a lot of Harry Potter on people’s lists as well. It was on mine. I haven’t read most of your choices, but I have read Unbreak My Heart. It didn’t make my list, but there were just too many options. Great pick!

    Yay, Paris and Anna! 😀
I’m not a huge fan of Iron Fey series, either. Though, like you, I appreciated the world created by the author.

Harry Potter was great. As most of them say. I’m not contradicting or agreeing to you because I haven’t read any of the Potter books or saw any movie. I know. But I’m not gonna miss it for the world. I’d be the latest reader and reviewer of HP. LOL
