Please welcome Brittany Geragotelis, debut author of What the Spell? (Prequel to Life’s a Witch, SimonTeen, January 2013)! She’s here today to share her top five series that go bump in the night!

Brooklyn is an almost-sixteen-year-old girl with normal teenage wants: to be pretty, to be popular, to be adored by a cute guy. Luckily for her, she’s a witch about to come of age–so she’s only a few spells away from making it all happen.

On her milestone birthday, Brooklyn’s parents finally unbind her powers, and she discovers her true gift: the ability to cast love spells. Pretty soon, Brooklyn has worked her magic to gain access to the elite crowd, and if she jump-starts her relationship with gorgeous Asher using a matchmaking spell, it’s harmless, right?

But Brooklyn’s life isn’t as enchanted as it seems. As the clique escalates its initiation tests, she’s forced to use magic to complete the tasks. And if anyone finds out who she really is and what she can do, her life is over, just like her ancestors in Salem. If she can’t use magic, what does Brooklyn have left–now that she has everything to lose?

Books That Go Bump in the Night

By Brittany Geragotelis

One of my favorite times of the year is October, because everything takes on a bit of a scarier edge. Those mysterious noises at night seem much more likely to be a ghost’s way of letting you know they’re still around. Dark and stormy nights become the perfect catalyst for horror. And the supernatural becomes totally natural as vampires, witches and zombies (oh my!) start popping up all over the place.

For me, there’s no better time for telling scary stories than Halloween. And we’re all in luck, because there are so many books out there that are sure to keep you up at night. So, whether you’re into straight-up horror, paranormal activity, true crime or you like your fear with a side of humor, here are my top five fave book series that go bump in the night.

1.     The  Mara Dyer Trilogy by Michelle Hodkin

As a huge fan of horror films/scary movies, I’ve often felt there’s a lack of books that can bring about the same tension and fear that I get from watching a good slasher flick. Michelle’s first book in this series, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, completely fills this need. The book practically had me reading through the spaces between my fingers as I covered my eyes, and definitely kept me up at night. Though I wouldn’t consider it horror, Mara Dyer is a harrowing thriller with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. The sequel, The Evolution of Mara Dyer, just released and is a killer read.

2.     The Survivor series by Amanda Havard

If you’re a history buff who’s always wondered where your favorite supernatural folklore comes from, The Survivor series is your official monster manual. In The Survivors, Amanda unveils the origins of our favorite spellcasters (along with lesser-known mythological creatures) tied up in a perfect story of family, love, loss and loneliness not seen since Twilight. The sequel, The Survivors: Point of Origin, is available now.

3.     The Megan Berry series by Stacey Jay

I’m a sucker for punny—and funny—paranormal stories (I first fell in love with this style of storytelling while watching “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and haven’t looked back). In fact, the main characters in my own books tend to deliver sarcastic quips while slaying supernatural baddies. This is why Stacey’s Megan Berry series found a special place in my heart almost immediately. You Are So Undead to Me, Undead Much? and Valentine’s Day of the Undead  pairs snappy and sassy dialogue with a zombie-settling cheerleader. This series is scarily funny.

4.     The I Hunt Killers books by Barry Lyga

I have to admit, I’m equally horrified and fascinated with serial killers. Both fictional (Jason Voorhees and Michael Meyers) and real (Ted Bundy and the Green River Killer). So when I heard about I Hunt Killers, I secretly wished I’d written it. After all, I’d always been curious about what happened to the kids of killers. Were they punished for the sins of their fathers? Did they worry that the urge to kill would run in the family? This series may not deal with bad guys of the supernatural variety, but sometimes real-world bad guys are even scarier. The sequel to I Hunt Killers, called Game, will be out in April 2013.

5.     The Life’s a Witch books by Brittany Geragotelis

Let’s be honest…is there anything scarier than high school? For some of us, being a teenager can be horrifying. But for a twitch (teen witch), life isn’t just difficult—it’s downright dangerous. My debut novel, What the Spell?, the prequel/spin-off to my Life’s a Witch series, takes surviving high school to a whole new level. Explosive spells, witchy romances and fights with a group of truly evil popular kids? There’s nothing dreadful about this read. Available in e-installments for just .99 cents now, and in hardback January 29, 2013.

These books sound interesting. No favorite creepy book.

  3. Galena says:

My “creepy” books are usually zombie books, so that’s what all of these books are: Forest of Hands and Teeth (and sequels) by Carrie Ryan; the Clockwork Century series by Cherie Priest; Enclave and Outpost by Anne Aguirre (technically mutants and not zombies, but the effect is the same).

  4. Mary Preston says:

Everything by Stephen King classifies as creepy for me.
