From the author the New York Times bestseller Eleanor & Park

A coming-of-age tale of fan fiction, family and first love.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan . . .

But for Cath, being a fan is her life — and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?

Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

Honest. Raw. Brilliant.

Ladies and gentlemen… I’ve found a new favorite, auto-buy author! Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell is hands-down one of my top reads of 2013, and it has a home on my favorite’s bookshelf. I haven’t been this excited about a new-to-me author since I discovered John Green’s books!

I really liked Fangirl from the beginning, but it wasn’t until about ¾ of the way through the story that the brilliance of it hit me. It snuck up on me, and hit me hard. There’s so much truth and beauty in Rowell’s words. I had to put it down for a moment to think about all the layers to her characters and story. It’s about first love, moving on, self-discovery, family relationships, fandom, and even mental illness.

I can’t recommend Fangirl enough. If you’re a fan of coming-of-age contemporary stories (young adult or new adult), or ever felt part of a book’s fandom, then this is a must-read for you! After reading Fangirl, I immediately bought Rowell’s Eleanor and Park, and it’s amazing and beautiful too. I’m looking forward to reading her debut Attachments, and I can’t wait for  next book, Landline!

Yay! Another fan! I can talk about how amazing this book is until the cows come home and then I’d probably just talk about it with the cows.

  5. I agree! I was just thinking, maybe I can evaluate people based on their liking of Rainbow Rowell. Like, if you don’t like Rainbow, we can’t be friends.

I read Attachments first and loved it and then got an ARC of Fangirl. I miss Levi.
