It all began with a ruined elixir and an accidental bolt of lightning…

Iolanthe Seabourne is the greatest elemental mage of her generation—or so she's being told. The one prophesied for years to be the savior of The Realm. It is her duty and destiny to face and defeat the Bane, the greatest mage tyrant the world has ever known. A suicide task for anyone let alone a sixteen-year-old girl with no training, facing a prophecy that foretells a fiery clash to the death.

Prince Titus of Elberon has sworn to protect Iolanthe at all costs but he's also a powerful mage committed to obliterating the Bane to avenge the death of his family—even if he must sacrifice both Iolanthe and himself to achieve his goal.

But Titus makes the terrifying mistake of falling in love with the girl who should have been only a means to an end. Now, with the servants of the Bane closing in, he must choose between his mission and her life. (Goodreads)

I was immediately sold on The Burning Sky from the moment I saw its cover; it’s just gorgeous. I’m not a huge fan of fantasy, but when I read the synopsis I was even more intrigued and it landed squarely on my must-read list. I’m thrilled to say that the story lived up to its cover!

Sherry Thomas did a fantastic job of building a world full of magic, and even fairy tales! The story started out slowly for me, but soon I got caught up in it and had a hard time putting it down. While reading, I was completely immersed in the story, enthralled by the landscape, the magic, and the characters.

I loved the banter between Iolanthe and Titus, and seeing their relationship slowly build through all of their adventures together. Iolanthe is smart and loyal, and though there were times she wanted to run and hide (who wouldn’t when suddenly asked to defeat a tyrant), she’s fierce. Prince Titus kept surprising me… just when I would think I knew who he was, another layer was revealed. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed in the romance. I think because I knew going in that Thomas also writes romance novels, I was expecting more… passion. That said, I liked how the romance slowly built up, and I’m looking forward to being back with them again in the next book.

The Burning Sky is a brilliant mash up of fantasy, action/adventure, and romance with a bit of a steam punk feel. There’s so much to love about this book, and there’s something for everyone. I can’t wait to find out what Sherry Thomas has in store for The Elemental Trilogy!
