Regret was for people with nothing to defend, people who had no water.

Lynn knows every threat to her pond: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and, most importantly, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty, or doesn't leave at all.

Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. Having a life means dedicating it to survival, and the constant work of gathering wood and water. Having a pond requires the fortitude to protect it, something Mother taught her well during their quiet hours on the rooftop, rifles in hand.

But wisps of smoke on the horizon mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it….

With evocative, spare language and incredible drama, danger, and romance, debut author Mindy McGinnis depicts one girl’s journey in a barren world not so different than our own. (Goodreads)

Narrator: Cassandra Campbell | Length: 8 hours 4 minutes

Not a Drop to Drink is a fascinating, standout post-apocalyptic dystopian read. After reading several dystopian novels over the past couple of years, I don’t say that lightly. I was enthralled by McGinnis’s realistic not-too-distant future world, where water is limited and strictly controlled. It was very believable for me, and made me seriously think about our world’s supply of fresh water.

Though I found the premise intriguing, sadly I had a hard time connecting with the characters. That may be because I listened to Not a Drop to Drink vs. reading it…it’s hard to say because I really liked the narrator. I enjoyed seeing Lynn’s journey from being isolated to learning how to socialize and developing relationships with her neighbors. However I was surprised, and a bit sad, by how indifferent I felt about the ending. That said, I do look forward to seeing what comes next from Mindy McGinnis!

Cassandra Campbell did a great job with the narration. To me, she was Lynn, and I felt she conveyed the tone of the book well.

I love when a dystopian has enough realistic elements for me to be able to envision it happening during my lifetime; it makes it that much more creepy!

I’ve heard some good things about Not a Drop to Drink, and if everything else is done well, I don’t always need to feel connected to the characters to enjoy reading. Hopefully that’s the case for me here!
