GRIM Tour Banner

I’m so excited to be part of the blog tour for the GRIM Anthology today! I had fun reading the 3 stories I discuss below, and I plan to continue on and read the others when I’m in the mood for a shorty story, or a GRIM tale.

The Raven Princess by Jon Skovron

I enjoyed The Raven Princess by Jon Skovron. As I haven’t read the original, I can’t compare the two, but I thought it was well-written and endearing. I liked how the young man wanted to break the princess’s curse simply because it made his life interesting and gave him a purpose. Also, I liked how the story demonstrated his inner strength and courage. I was a little surprised by the ending, and though a bit cheesy (it is a fairy tale after all), it was fitting for the them.

Thinner Than Water by Saundra Mitchell

I got more than I bargained for with Thinner Than Water by Saundra Mitchell! Knowing nothing about the story, I did not expect it to be about King that wants to marry his daughter, and revenge. This is most definitely NOT a fairy tale for children. Though the story was disturbing, I found the ending satisfying, and even wished it was a little longer. I wouldn’t have minded reading how the revenge played out!

Before the Roses Bloomed by Ellen Hopkins

I liked Before the Rose Bloomed by Ellen Hopkins, and reading about Greta’s journey to save her friend and love, K, from the Snow Queen. Of the three stories, it was the the most familiar to me, as I’ve read/seen variations of The Snow Queen before. The ones that stand out the most to me are The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Disney’s recent movie, FROZEN.

The Grim Stories in TV shows…

I have a confession to make. Though I’ve always enjoyed fairy tales, it’s only very recently that I’ve taken an interest in them and chosen to learn more about them. Why now? I have two one word for you. SUPERNATURAL. As in, Supernatural, the TV series on the CW. When I got really sick in January (so sick, I couldn’t even read!), I randomly decided to watch the pilot episode, and then another, and another… until I realized I was hooked! Almost two months later and I’m now on season 6. YES, I know that’s a lot of TV, but it was nice having Dean (my TVBF) and Sam to keep me company while I was miserable and isolated because I had the “plague” (as my husband called it).

There are a lot of elements in Supernatural that I now can’t seem to get enough of that before I would be somewhat indifferent to… Basically, I had a take it or leave it type of attitude toward stories about fairy tales and urban legends. For example, when the TV show, GRIMM (NBC) premiered, I watched it and really, really liked it. But then when all my shows came back on and I couldn’t keep up with them all, GRIMM went on the back burner. But now, I’m looking forward to catching up with the show, and I’m frustrated that it’s not on Netflix Instant!

Since I’m such a greenie to all things GRIMM, I can’t really compare most of the short stories in the anthology to TV, film, or books but I think this gives me an advantage. I’m reading them without judging them on how they compare to the originals, and most are fresh and new to to me.

What are your favorite TV shows, movies, or books that feature GRIM stories?

I saw an announcement of this giveaway on Twitter and had to come check it out! I love fairy tale retellings, the darker the better, even though I’m a huge Disney fan. 🙂

I’ve enjoyed the few episodes of Grimm that I’ve seen, so much that I recently checked out the DVD of Season One from my local library. I’ve also really liked the anthologies of fairy tale retellings for adults that are edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling. This anthology, though written for the YA market, is of great interest to me. Several authors within it have written other YA stories that I’ve enjoyed, and I’m excited to read their stories in Grim and the stories of the other, new-to-me, authors. 🙂

  28. I haven’t read the Grim(m) fairly tales so this would be a great way to get me started! Thanks for the chance!
