Faces On My WallFaces On My Wall by Jesse Wilson

by Jesse Wilson

A coming-of-age story and a comedic tour-de-force, meet Jamey Fuller, a cocky California kid who achieves his wildest ambition: admission to The Juilliard School in New York City, the country’s most prestigious acting school. Once there, he is sure, he will find fame and glory. He will dance on tables, as in “Fame.” He will take his place among the Great Actors of his time, freed from the fear of becoming just like his father, a director of Hollywood TV spots. But the reality proves hilariously brutal, as Jamey grapples with Shakespeare, lust, disillusionment, cut-throat classmates and imperious teachers. FACES ON MY WALL is a privileged glimpse into the bizarre hidden world of an actor’s training, a poignant father-and-son story, and the chronicle of a young man’s painful gropings toward maturity.

Faces On My Wall
Dream Cast

by Jesse Wilson

Recently, I was contacted by a film team in Canada to present to me the option to adapt Faces On My Wall to the screen. The novel is the adaptation of the touring stage show called “Face the City,” and on and off, over the past year or two, I’ve often wondered, like many authors probably, what would this story look like on the big screen? “Faces” could either be a full length feature film with a sizeable cast or shot as the definitive solo performance film which hasn’t really been ever produced properly, from what I’ve seen out there. A few cinematic embers glowing out there, like Demme’s “Swimming To Cambodia” with the late great Spalding Gray, but nothing beyond that; nothing of lasting power, in my opinion. So I’m gonna play here…

If Faces On My Wall were turned into a movie that wasn’t a solo performance film who would my dream cast be? I’m in major favor of going with totally unknown actors. There tend to be little suprises with Hollywood actors. Which would most likely make the movie have to go the Independent Sundance route. Cool. But that wouldn’t be very fun for this blog post! So… lets say Hollywood knocks on the door with its velvet gloves and says “Jesse, we got some A-List Actors on board,” (which would just be so beautifully ironic considering the title of the book!); “we,” meaning, “The Hollywood Big Shots can pluck them onto the silver screen at a moment notice, and we, the Velvet Gloves want you to choose your cast… Have some bottled water!” This is a dream! Okay…

Lets start at the top of the “Faces” character list. For Jamey Fuller, the main character: Andrew Garfield, the actor who played Spiderman in the most recent Spiderman movie would be good. Young, gangly, sexy but insecure. He’s good. (Of course, if this really is a dream cast, man, I’d go with Marlon Brando in his prime, even before he made “A Streetcar Named Desire.” That would be brilliant. Geez, I’d have Marlon Brando play all the characters. Even the female ones, he’s so good. Didn’t they already make a movie like that with John Malkovich?) For Jamey’s nemesis, his two-faced “friendemy” named Nick Blaze, believe it or not, I’d go with Robert Pattison from “Twilight.” I think he’s old enough and an interesting actor enough to be “villany.” That charming smile would work great for him as he tries to convince Jamey to quit school and join him on the open road. (Actually, Marlon Brando, I think, would make a much better Nick Blaze.) I’m too tired to think about all the other actors. I wonder if the Canadian film team ever asks me this question. This is exhausting!
