THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE is a fable that reshapes modern fantasy: moving, terrifying and elegiac - as pure as a dream, as delicate as a butterfly's wing, as dangerous as a knife in the dark, from storytelling genius Neil Gaiman.

It began for our narrator forty years ago when the family lodger stole their car and committed suicide in it, stirring up ancient powers best left undisturbed. Dark creatures from beyond the world are on the loose, and it will take everything our narrator has just to stay alive: there is primal horror here, and menace unleashed - within his family and from the forces that have gathered to destroy it.

His only defense is three women, on a farm at the end of the lane. The youngest of them claims that her duckpond is ocean. The oldest can remember the Big Bang

Narrator: Neil Gaiman; Length: 5 hrs and 48 mins

The Ocean at the End of the Lane is beautifully written and crafted. It’s the first book I’ve read by Neil Gaiman, and I still can’t believe it’s taken me so long to read one of his works! The Ocean at this End of the Lane is a fable story, narrated by a man in his forties recalling events that occurred in his childhood at the farm at the end of the lane. It’s magical and haunting, and I felt completely immersed in the story while I was listening to the audio.

Although The Ocean at the End of the Lane is not typically a story I’d seek out and read, I will absolutely be reading more books by Neil Gaiman. I loved that he narrated the story himself; he’s a fantastic narrator! I’m looking forward to my next Neil Gaiman book, any suggestions on which to choose next?

I love reading reviews of this book, it’s just impossible not to be charmed by it! I do not have the audiobook, but I imagine Gaiman would make a great narrator. Plus, after all, the author knows best all the pauses and expressions.
