Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers

The night Quin Kincaid takes her Oath, she will become what she has trained to be her entire life. She will become a Seeker. This is her legacy, and it is an honor. As a Seeker, Quin will fight beside her two closest companions, Shinobu and John, to protect the weak and the wronged. Together they will stand for light in a shadowy world. And she’ll be with the boy she loves–who’s also her best friend.

But the night Quin takes her Oath, everything changes. Being a Seeker is not what she thought. Her family is not what she thought. Even the boy she loves is not who she thought.

And now it’s too late to walk away.

For a moment, Quin saw her mother’s beauty at its full force, like a warm spring sun coming out from behind heavy clouds.

Fiona Kincaid, Quin’s mother, is a woman who has lived for decades in the shadow of her husband, Briac. A redheaded beauty, Fiona trained on the Scottish estate in her youth but did not take her oath and become a Seeker—for reasons that her daughter has never fully understood.

Quin has always known that her mother could see into other people’s minds. As a young girl, she had to be careful of her thoughts in her mother’s presence, because Fiona often listened in.

Now Fiona has changed and is hiding this skill from others and even from herself. Quin has noticed her mother drinking more and more frequently, as though to drown out thoughts of those around her—especially Briac.

Fiona has never told Quin anything to make her question her upbringing and the life Briac intends her to lead. But on the day before Quin will take her oath, Fiona begs her daughter to rethink her future, and she offers Quin a choice:

Excerpt from Seeker

“Your life is yours,” Fiona said again, almost urgently, taking a seat next to her. She glanced toward the window, then back. “If you . . . if you wanted to go to John right now . . . if you wanted to leave the estate with him . . . have a different sort of life together, right now . . . I would understand.”

It was such a strange thing to say, she decided her mother must be more drunk than she looked.

                  “I’m not drunk, Quin.”

“I didn’t say that! But . . . now that you mention it, I do smell something in your mug.”

                  “I’m not drunk,” Fiona repeated.

                  “I never said you were.”

                  “You did.”

It was pointless to argue about whether or not she’d said those words, so she didn’t bother. “I’m going to take my oath tonight, Ma. Didn’t Briac tell you? I can’t leave the estate.”

“He did tell me.” Fiona put a hand on top of her daughter’s hand and held it there firmly. “But I am telling you this: you take your oath only if that’s truly what you want to do.”

Quin was momentarily speechless. Finally she managed, “What—what have I been doing here my whole life? Of course it’s what I want to do.”
