American Rebecca Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister, Lacey, has always been the romantic who fantasized about glamour and royalty, fame and fortune. Yet it's Bex who seeks adventure at Oxford and finds herself living down the hall from Prince Nicholas, Great Britain's future king. And when Bex can't resist falling for Nick, the person behind the prince, it propels her into a world she did not expect to inhabit, under a spotlight she is not prepared to face.

Dating Nick immerses Bex in ritzy society, dazzling ski trips, and dinners at Kensington Palace with him and his charming, troublesome brother, Freddie. But the relationship also comes with unimaginable baggage: hysterical tabloids, Nick's sparkling and far more suitable ex-girlfriends, and a royal family whose private life is much thornier and more tragic than anyone on the outside knows. The pressures are almost too much to bear, as Bex struggles to reconcile the man she loves with the monarch he's fated to become.

Which is how she gets into trouble.

Now, on the eve of the wedding of the century, Bex is faced with whether everything she's sacrificed for love-her career, her home, her family, maybe even herself-will have been for nothing. (Goodreads)

Confession: I am a bit of an Anglophile. It started when I was four years old and watched “Robin Hood” (the fox version, obviously) until the VHS tape wore out and continued through a study abroad semester in Britain and to today. So there isn’t a universe in which I wasn’t going to fall head over heels for THE ROYAL WE, by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan.

But it’s not just a lifetime of Anglophilia that makes me love this book. It won my love on its own merits … kind of like the romance between Bex and Nick. THE ROYAL WE is charming and funny and sad and delightful. You guys, I just loved it so much! And another plus, it’s written by Cocks and Morgan, otherwise known as The Fug Girls. I read their blog religiously and loved the little bits of their fashion blog that turned up in this book: “hoiking” a dress up, an appreciation of fab coats, and, of course, a drama-filled weekend at a country manor house.

Okay, I’m gushing. I’ll reel it in a bit. THE ROYAL WE follows a normal American—whose father invented a beer fridge/couch. Which, YES—who strikes up a friendship with the future monarch over crosswords (called cryptics) and a wonderfully bad TV show. Yet what follows isn’t the standard whirlwind fantasy, but a real relationship that requires work, sacrifice, and courage.

I loved how Cocks and Morgan took us beyond the dream of dating a prince and spun a compelling, often bittersweet, story about two people who not only love each other but choose each other. This isn’t a love-at-first-sight sort of affair, and I appreciate that so much. I also appreciate the amazing character of Gaz and just desperately want him to be real and become friends with me.

This is such a delightful book. Here’s hoping for a sequel—royal babies, please and thank you! Now I’m off to get in and out of cars without worrying about paparazzi upskirt photos and schlump about with my hair in a ponytail. A final confession: I loved reading about royals, but I am so glad I’m not a princess.
