“The mother I knew would never do those things.
But maybe I never knew her after all.”
Clothes, jokes, coded messages…Cecilia Brooks and her mom shared everything. At least, CeCe thought they did. Six months ago, her mom killed herself after accusations of having sex with a student, and CeCe’s been the subject of whispers and taunts ever since. Now, at the start of her high school senior year, between dealing with her grieving, distracted father, and the social nightmare that has become her life, CeCe just wants to fly under the radar. Instead, she’s volunteering at the school’s crisis hotline—the same place her mother worked.
As she counsels troubled strangers, CeCe’s lingering suspicions about her mom’s death surface. With the help of Sam, a new student and newspaper intern, she starts to piece together fragmented clues that point to a twisted secret at the heart of her community. Soon, finding the truth isn’t just a matter of restoring her mother’s reputation, it’s about saving lives—including CeCe’s own…
Suspects of The Darkest Lie
Six months ago, CeCe’s mom allegedly committed suicide after she was accused of having sex with a student. However, when CeCe volunteers at the crisis hotline, she discovers that Tabitha Brooks’s death is not as straightforward as it appears. In fact, her mom might have been . . . murdered.
Who could’ve been responsible for Tabitha Brooks’ death?
Suspect #1 – Mr. Willoughby
Ty Willoughby is a high school psychology teacher. He is also a faculty advisor for the crisis hotline, which is run through the school. He is obsessed with comic books and wears superhero t-shirts. His wife passed away two decades ago, and he has not publicly dated since. He knew CeCe’s mom, Tabitha, first as a student and then as a colleague. He admits to having had a crush on her.
Suspect #2 – Mackenzie Myers
Mackenzie is the reigning princess of Lakewood High. She is the richest girl in town and also has the biggest ass. Her favorite pastime is bullying underclassmen — and anyone who dares to cross her. She once dated Tommy Farrow, the boy with whom Tabitha allegedly had an affair, and she will do whatever it takes to make sure the past stays buried.
Suspect #3 – Mr. Winters
Jovial, charming Mr. Winters is the principal of the school. He is a good-looking man who is well-liked by the students. He has lived through scandal, too — his wife, who used to be the school’s guidance counselor, had an affair and left him. He tells CeCe that the staff of Lakewood High are his family, and he will protect them at all costs. Since Tabitha was a teacher at the school, his protection extends to CeCe, as well.
Suspect #4 — Justin Blake
Justin is Tommy Farrow’s best friend. In the months after Tabitha’s death, he was CeCe’s biggest tormentor. He sexually harassed her on a daily basis, and now that he and his friends have graduated, CeCe feels like she can finally achieve her goal of being invisible. But Justin is not gone. He is still a presence on the high school social scene and is fiercely protective of Tommy. He does everything in his power to make sure CeCe doesn’t speak to Tommy.
Suspect #5 — Mr. Swift
Mr. Swift is CeCe’s study hall teacher. He seems a little too involved in his student’s affairs. He asks the yearbook staff for photos of the girls in the senior class for a special “project.” He also has a copy of an inappropriate photograph on his desk.
So, there you have it! These are the suspects in The Darkest Lie! Who do you think could have killed Tabitha Brooks? Or was her death a suicide, after all?
