You Before Anyone ElseModel Finley needs someone to help her shed her “good girl” persona, so she’ll try Eddie on for size.New York City model Finley is fed up with hearing the same feedback at castings: she needs to take some serious action to wipe the “good girl” stamp from her resume if she wants to launch to stardom.

Enter Eddie Wells. He’s shallow, predictable…and just as lost as Finley feels. Deep down, Finley is drawn to Eddie’s bravado, his intensity. Except Eddie is hiding something. A big something. And when it surfaces, both loving and leaving Finley will become so much harder.

Q & A with Mark Perini,
co-author of
You Before Anyone Else

In the length of a tweet (140 characters), tell us about your book.

Young models Eddie & Finley struggle to determine if love trumps all as secrets come to light in the dark corners of NYC’s modeling industry

Are you working on something new? Can you tell us what’s coming next?

I’m writing a speculative YA about a kid named Cole who wakes up from a coma after sustaining a brain injury and subsequently starts to lose touch with reality. He has two lives–the reality and the dream world. He finds the dream world more alluring.

What’s the best writing advice you’ve received?

Stephen King was asked what he thought writing is at its core. His answer in his book On Writing was “Telepathy, of course.” And that really struck a chord with me. When you’re writing, you are essentially communicating your ideas directly into the mind to the readers. So that’s the basis of why I write…because who doesn’t want super powers? All joking aside, I knew I had a strong message to send and if I could send it “telepathically” or otherwise, it was my duty and privilege to do so.

What is the one book you think everyone should read?

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?

It would be to fly, no doubt about that. I’m addicted to travel and it would be amazing to be able to get up and go anytime/anywhere I wanted.

If you could jump into a book and live in that world, which would it be?

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin hands down. I’d for sure be a Stark knight. Frankly, I really think I was meant to live in medieval times.

Who are your all-time favorite authors?

Ernest Hemmingway, Jules Verne, George Orwell, Steven King and
Cormac McCarthy

As a kid, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?

I wanted to be a spy. More specifically, I wanted to be James Bond. I wanted to know all the worlds’ secrets and use all the most advanced gadgets that MI6 had to offer.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

For sure it was the moment when I finally saw my book on the shelf at Barnes and Nobel. It was a moment of pure ecstasy and accomplishment all wrapped into one.

When it comes to writing, are you a planner or pantser?

I’m a forever a pantser. For me, free writing is extremely liberating and when you take away all those constraints you get something that’s more organic and from the heart.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I’m obsessed with dystopian sci-fi/fantasy. Most of the reading I do is in or around that genre.

What book do you love that doesn’t get a lot of hype?

The Bartimaeus Sequence is my all time favorite YA series. I realize full well that it got a lot of hype back in the day, but I am left wondering why it hasn’t been made into a movie?

That guy is really one of the authors?! When I first scrolled the page, I thought he was inspiration for the male role. That’s pretty sweet!
