Owlet

Somewhere between falling and flying… there is a girl.

Iris has a secret. She lost her memory eight years ago and never told a living soul. After an asthma attack one night she finds out that her dreams of a strange house on a snowy island may be a memory resurfacing but the more she learns about the past the more she realizes the life she has been living is a lie. As the façade her father has built starts to crumble around her she will have to decide which means more to her; the truth or her life.

Writing the Songs

by Emma Michaels

Owlet takes place in our own world but with an avian twist. As part of the culture of the Stryx that goes into the novel there are legends, their own mapping of the constellations, history and songs. At first I was hesitant about putting songs in because they have been more and more popular recently and aren’t always liked but it ended up coming into the story so naturally that it was a risk worth taking. My father started teaching me how to sing from a very young age and his passion has always been music. So growing up I loved to write lyrics whenever I had an opportunity or inspiration struck.

It wasn’t as important to me as my art or my writing but it was always a fun side project. These songs would find their way into my writer’s notebooks I would keep next to my bed at night or into my school notebooks instead of my computer class assignments (because I already knew the info thanks to my dad’s other love, computers so it was SUCH a boring class for me).

So next thing you know, here I am years later after having stopped writing songs and suddenly I have a character singing and instead of just describing her voice lyrics start popping into my head. Then the lyrics start to form a story of their own that goes along with one of the legends of the Stryx and next thing you know, Elena’s love of music isn’t just a chance to show another character that sometimes something unexpected can be beautiful but also a chance to bring in one of her favorite stories that holds meaning throughout the series.

Have you ever written lyrics? Did you ever have something you did as a hobby that turned out to be helpful to you later on?

Read along excerpt for Owlet

Iris, however, had never been allowed in this room before, and she couldn’t help but feel slighted that when she finally gained entry into her father’s world she could not even turn her head to look around.

Diana came through the door and straight to Iris’ side. “I am so happy you’re awake,” she said, her voice soft and filled with worry. She always took Iris’ asthma attacks the hardest, especially since she was the one who went through the schooling and classes in order to be able to act as Iris’ nurse when needed. “I’ll get this out in a shake of a bird’s tail.”

Iris tried to seem optimistic and attempted to let her eyes smile, but she hated being intubated more than anything. It was the final step towards the loss of all freedom. She couldn’t move, her own body wouldn’t breathe for her and she had to rely on those around her just to keep her alive. It always felt wrong, even if it didn’t happen very often.
