Banned Books Week 2013It’s Banned Book Week! I don’t typically sign up for giveaway hops, but as I’m a huge supporter for the freedom to read, I thought it’d be fun to participate in this one. This BBW Hop is hosted by I Am a Reader, Not a Writer and Bookhounds.

ALA and BannedBooksWeek.org have several events listed for the week including, Banned Books Heroes, Twitter parties, and a virtual read-out, so be sure to check them out. Also, when mentioning or chatting about BBW on Twitter, be sure to use the #bannedbooksweek hashtag. You can also use or mention these: #bannedbookparty, #heroes, @OIF, @KidsRight2Read, @freadom, @FTRF.

OK, now it’s time to get to the giveaway!

A Book and a Latte is giving away a banned book of the winner’s choice!

I’ve listed some banned books below as suggestions (and for general awareness), but as long as the requested book is on a banned books list, and under $15, I will award the winner’s choice.

  • Looking for Alaska by John Green
  • Harry Potter (the series) by J.K. Rowling
  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

I read that during the Apartheid years in South Africa, Black Beauty was banned because it had the word black in the title. That’s about the craziest reason I’ve ever heard.

I’m surprised Harry Potter was banned, actually. I’ve never read the books, but I’ve heard so many amazing things about them that I’m really floored that there’s anyone who DOESN’T like them. Haha.

  18. Thank you for the chance! My favorite books are also my favorite frequently banned/challenged books: The Catcher in the Rye, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I was also surprised to learn that Black Beauty has been banned (in parts of Africa) simply due to its title and the “implied racism.” Kinda crazy.

I still have a hard time believing that Harry Potter and Hunger Games are banned. I just dont get why. I mean I know why people tell me they were banned but really I dont agree or get it. I guess I just think it should be a parental decision and not some cray-cray parent group trying to ban books for everyone. But thats just me:)

There are so many books on the banned or challenged list that I have read and thoroughly enjoyed. It would take too long to name them all. Beloved, Brave New World, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Catcher in the Rye, The Color Purple, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, The Bluest Eye, Of Mice and Men, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Outsiders, Native Son, Lord of the Flies, Pillars of the Earth, Lord of the Rings, Go Tell it on the Mountain..and the list goes on. I have read at least 40 of the books on the classics banned list.

  45. MonaG says:

I was surprised to see A Child Called “It.” I read the book and its sequels some time back and they made me boiling mad and incredibly sad at the same time. Yes, the abuse the author suffered as a child was horrible and depicted very graphically. But how is that different from the unfortunate stories we see on the news every day? Are we going to ban the news too? The perpetrators of these atrocities need to be exposed, shamed, and punished.

  46. bn100 says:

    surprised by harry potter

  47. Stephanie H. says:

I’ve loved several books that have been on the banned list. One of my favorites is probably Harry Potter.
