Q&A with Katlyn Duncan
In the length of a tweet (140 characters), tell us about your book.
Hadley is ready to have the summer of her life, until Will returns and flips her plans upside down. This Summer could change everything.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
The Giver by Lois Lowry.
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Teleportation. Would make my fear of flying non-existent!
Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
It’s a little superficial but I love seeing my name on my gorgeous book covers!
If you could jump into a book and live in that world, which would it be?
Even though it’s quite dangerous (I read a lot of paranormal) I think the Otherworld (from Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong) because I’d love to be one of those awesome women! Preferably a witch!
What is your dream cast for your book?
I always do a Pinterest board for my novels (http://www.pinterest.com/duncankatlyn/this-summer/), it’s really helpful for visualization and for “dream casting”.
I’ve always had Hadley as Candace Accola.
Her brother, Ethan was next, the adorable Logan Lerman.
Will took a while for me to visualize but Brenton Thwaites eventually won!
Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
I don’t have one for the book since I have a whole playlist that I listened to for inspiration, but the theme song for Will and Hadley is “You + I” by One Direction. It inspired the last scene of the novel.
What do you listen to while you write? Or do you prefer silence?
When writing I can listen to instrumental music only. Music with words messes with my flow. But when editing I listen to ambient sounds (like rainfall) so I can focus on the words.
Do you have any pets?
Yes! A wheaten terrier named Jamie. She’s the love of my life!
Who or what inspired your last book?
Summers working at a local pool inspired this book, but more of the feeling since This Summer takes place at a camp.
When it comes to writing, are you a planner or pantser?
Mostly a plotter. I hate cutting scenes so I tend to spend a lot of time plotting before writing anything down.
What is next on your to read list?
Proxy by Alex London. I went to BookCon this year and saw him speak with Veronica Roth. He definitely sold me on his book!
Do your friends or enemies ever find themselves in your books?
Not any exact people, but when I’m writing a good friend or an enemy, I do take qualities of people I’ve known in those categories and infuse them with the character in my head.

Katlyn Duncan was born and raised in a small town in western Massachusetts. Her overactive imagination involved invisible friends, wanting to be a Disney Princess and making up her own stories. Her bibliophile mom always encouraged her love of reading and that stayed with her since.
