TGIF: Gateway Books

TGIF is a weekly meme hosted by Ginger over at GReads! It’s a fun way to end the week by recapping posts and answering her question of the week. This is my first time participating :).

This Friday’s question is:

Gateway Books: Which particular books opened you up to a new genre?

I have to credit Twilight by Stephenie Meyer as my gateway book for the YA genre. I know I’m not alone on this one! I never thought I’d be interested in a book about vampires but my friends (adult) kept talking about it and telling me to read it. Then I saw it on sale in the grocery store and picked up, deciding to see what all the fuss was about. Oh. My. Goodness. I devoured this book. Then the next, and the next… All the sudden the adult books waiting on my book shelf just weren’t as appealing. Mainly because they were heavy and depressing. All the sudden, reading was like it used to be for me – fun, and a way to escape.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins was another gateway book for me… it not only introduced me to the dystopian genre, it also made me fall so in love with the YA genre that I was no longer embarrassed to admit it! Who freaking cares? I’m an adult. I’m in my early 30s and I heart young adult literature. So there. Once I accepted this I began devouring books… I went from reading 1-3 books per month, to 2-3 books per week!

Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles was my gateway book for YA contemporary. I saw that Kristi from The Story Siren had it listed under favorites on goodreads.com, and was excited when I was able to download it immediately online from my library. I read it in one sitting. I literally saw it on her list that afternoon and by the wee hours of the next morning I had finished. I was hooked peeps. I started A Book and a Latte a couple of months later. 🙂
