At Eastwood High, love is a battlefield.
Two guys, two girls, two thousand dollars, and one epic water gun battle.Senior year? It’s all about Senior Assassin, a yearly water gun tournament where the last team standing receives a cool two grand. Connor wants nothing more than to split that prize with his best friend, Josh. When their mission is put in jeopardy by Molly–thanks to her crush on Connor–Josh comes up with a plan to thwart her, one that involves his sister, Peyton…
Peyton’s deepest desire is to score entry to MIT. She’s working her tail off to achieve her goal, but when she’s dragged into Connor and Josh’s water gun tournament, their antics threaten to leave her high and dry. As Peyton’s forced to choose between chemistry class and chemistry with Connor, will the super student and the super athlete discover they have more in common than they imagined?
One thing’s for certain: When Connor, Peyton, Josh, and Molly load their weapons, someone’s bound to get shot through the heart. (Goodreads)
Shot Through the Heart is a heart-warming read that had me smiling and laughing! The story revolves around Senior Assassin – a water gun competition with a prize of $2,000 – and childhood friends Connor, Josh, and Peyton. The story is fast paced, and told in alternating perspectives between Peyton, and her brother’s best friend Connor.
My favorite thing about this book is that the main characters, Peyton and Connor, are so smart and driven. I love that Peyton is smart in the have-to-work-hard-for-it way. She’s dedicated to her dream of being accepted to MIT, of becoming an engineer, and potentially working for NASA (hello, that was so me!). This aspect made Burnham’s characters so… refreshing.
Reading this, I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic for high school, and wish that our school played Senior Assassin! The storyline was somewhat predictable, but that didn’t faze me at all. Shot Through the Heart is a sweet romantic comedy that will tug at your heart!

Ha, this definitely sounds cute. And I love that you were like Peyton, in wanting to work for NASA (that’s actually really interesting). It’s nice to hear that the main character actually works for her smarts instead of just being amazing at everything. Great review!
