Finding your eternal soulmate – easy.
Stopping a true-love-hungry evil – not so much…
After breaking a centuries-old romantic curse, Emma Connor is (almost) glad to get back to normal problems. Although…it’s not easy dealing with the jealous cliques and gossip that rule her exclusive Upper East Side prep, even for a sixteen-year-old newbie witch. Having the most-wanted boy in school as her eternal soul mate sure helps ease the pain-especially since wealthy, rocker-hot Brendan Salinger is very good at staying irresistibly close…But something dark and hungry is using Emma and Brendan’s deepest fears to reveal damaging secrets and destroy their trust in each other. And Emma’s crash course in über-spells may not be enough to keep them safe…or to stop an inhuman force bent on making their unsuspected power its own. (Goodreads)

**Spoilery if you haven’t read Spellbound (book 1)**

I loved Spellbound, and it wrapped up pretty nicely, so I was surprised and excited to learn that there would be a sequel! I basically stalked Cara Lynn Shultz and NetGalley in my impatience to get my hands on this one!

In Spellbound, Emma and Brendan found each other and discovered that true love really exists, and were able to break the centuries old curse that kept bringing them together and tragically tearing them apart. Spellcaster begins a few months after Spellbound ends, and Emma and Brendan are blissfully happy… until they learn that true love is powerful, and that people will kill in order to steal that power for themselves. This storyline walks a fine line of potential cheesiness (just like with Spellbound) but never fear, Shultz’s characterizations and writing keeps the story grounded!

Everything is amped up in Spellcaster – the witchy magic and the “sexy times”, which is great! I really like Angelique as a character and was thrilled to see so much more of her in this installment. What I love most about this series are the characters – Emma, Brendan, and their friends behave and talk like real teenagers – and I feel like I know them. The dialogue is fantastic!

I have to admit, there was one small thing that kind of threw me off… mid-way through to the end of the book are occasional POV changes to Angelique. I love stories with alternating POVs, but this seemed really sporadic. On one hand it was a treat to get to read from Angelique’s POV, but then on the other it seemed out of the blue, and was a little confusing because I had to remind myself who was speaking… Overall, I think fans of Angelique will love this aspect of Spellcaster!

Spellcaster is a great sequel to Spellbound; fans will definitely not be disappointed!

I read the first book. Didn’t realize there was another one until now. I like that there’s more witchy goodness. And of course sexy times 🙂

I loved Spellbound when I read it, and after finishing it was intrigued to see how Cara would continue this story. Sounds like it’s well done, and I’m excited to hear there is more of Angelique (loved her in the first book and wanted more!) Great review!

I agree about the switching POV. It made sense for the story to hear things from Angelique’s side, but it could have been smoother..:) But I still really liked the story, and I loved that there was more witchcraft here – I felt like I was in an old episode of Charmed!:D
