Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.
The week’s WoW feature is:
After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.
Her opponents are men—thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the kings council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.
Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her… but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead… quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.
I was sold on this book as soon as I saw somewhere that it’s like Game of Thrones for the YA audience. I know it’s risky to listen to comparisons… a lot of times it’s setting yourself up for disappointment. This comparison peaked my interest though because I just finished watching Season 1 of Games of Thrones, and it’s VERY adult… the violence (mainly with the animals) and sexual content at times is a little much for me. This book/series sounds awesome, and I was psyched to see it on NetGalley! I bought the prequel novella The Assassin and the Pirate Lord last week (only $0.99 on Amazon) and plan to read it this month.
What book are you anxiously waiting for this week?

I featured this one as well today! Gorgeous cover and stunning premise, to be sure. I really like Game of Thrones, both the book series and HBO version. I’m hoping that Throne of Glass has the high fantasy elements but sticks to it’s own plot and such. Anyway, great feature!

What a gorgeous cover! I am so sold on the story, I want this one – it would be just my luck if it’s already been taken off of NetGalley and I have to beg Bloomsbury because I need this one early (whines).
Love your pick!

I haven’t watched Game of Thrones so I can’t make that comparison, but to me this sounds a lot like Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder, and I LOVED that book!:) I saw this one on Netgalley, but my tbr is so darn long already that I didn’t request it. I’ll definitely read it once it’s released though:)

Awesome, we chose the same book for Waiting on Wednesday! I read the excerpt available on Facebook (it’s the first two chapters) and wrote down some of my first impressions on my Waiting on Wednesday post.
I’ve already preordered this book.. I wish it would be released NOW! 😀

I’ve been seeing this alot recently and completely agree that it’s one to watch out for. Comparing it to Game of Thrones though is a big risk, I don’t know how many find the massive GOT books appealing at that age. Still, I love Game of Thrones…hopefully I’ll Like this.

I’m reading nothing but good things about this book… comparison to GoT is quite a good start but will it suffice? I’m definitely picking up this book when it comes out!
