ArmchairBEA 2012

Hello, and welcome! It’s the first day of Armchair BEA 2012 – the day for introductions! Even though I’ll be in NYC for Book Expo America (BEA), I couldn’t help but register for Armchair BEA as well. I had such a fantastic time armchair-ing it last year and met so many wonderful bloggers, authors, and publicist/publisher contacts. I hope to connect with the same people again –a few in NYC, in person–and meet new peeps!

This year, participants have been asked to choose five interview questions to answer about ourselves as an introduction. Here are mine:

Please tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? How long have you been blogging? Why did you get into blogging?

Hi, I’m Jen :). I live in Colorado with my husband and pupdog Koda. I’ve been book blogging for just over a year; I celebrated A Book and a Latte‘s one year blogoversary on May 11th!

I decided to start my own book blog because after I embraced my love for the YA genre, I needed an outlet to gush about my favorite books and authors (at the time, The Hunger Games). My friends in real life weren’t reading the same books, or as many, and I found myself visiting more and more book blogs. I was very hesitant to start my own, but the book blogging community was so welcoming, helpful, and friendly… I’m so glad that I just went for it!

What is your favorite book you have read so far in 2012?

Ready Player OneReady Player One by Ernest Cline is hands down my favorite book I’ve read so far this year, I absolutely loved this book! I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by Whil Wheaton (THE perfect narrator for his book) and it’s full of awesome. I believe it’s technically an adult book, but it’s easily a YA crossover title, at least for those that love 80’s pop culture, and references from the 70s to present day. There’s a quest, danger, a little romance, and nerdy-ness galore… so much to love! My review hasn’t posted yet; I’ve been saving it for June, since it’s audiobook month, but it will be up soon!

What is your favorite feature on your blog (i.e. author interviews, memes, something specific to your blog)?

I love featuring authors on my blog, especially debut authors! Interviews are my favorite way to feature an author. I really enjoy learning more about authors, and developing a bit of a relationship with them through the process. I’d really like to post more author interviews this year.

What is your favorite part about the book blogging community? Is there anything that you would like to see change in the coming years?

My favorite part about the book blogging community is the people. I’ve met so many fantastic readers, bloggers, authors, and publicists – online and in real life – through book blogging… Seriously, the people are what keep me blogging!

As far as changes I’d like to see… I’d like to eliminate the drama that occasionally occurs between bloggers and authors, but realistically I can’t control how others behave. I think if everyone would remember to treat others the way they’d like to be treated, a lot of the conflict could be avoided.

Tell us one non-book-related thing that everyone reading your blog may not know about you.

I love playing the piano. I don’t really like playing for other people, I play just for me. It’s an instant stress reliever and makes me feel at peace… I know that sounds cheesy but it’s true. Sadly, I’m not able to play by sight – meaning I can’t just sit down and play whatever sheet music is placed in front of me. I have to work at learning a new song, and practice a lot.

That’s all for me! I’m looking forward to hopping around to everyone else’s interviews! I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to do while I’m in NYC but I’ll try, and I’ll be playing catch up once I’m back next week.

Today I’m attending the BEA Bloggers Conference, and then the Scholastic Live event in the evening! I hope to post about the day tonight… Sadly I don’t have a laptop with me so I’ll be attempting to blog from my iPhone. Ha! We’ll see how that works… I will definitely be posting recaps after BEA though, once I’m back home. Follow me on Twitter (@bookandlatte) for live BEA tweets!

  3. I ALMOST picked up Ready Player One at the library last week. It has caught my eye on the blogs and IRL ..now I really wish I would have, but I have 4 going right now, so I need to concentrate dang it!

Happy to meet you! I’ll look forward to your blog updates!

Lucky you! Have a great time! I took piano lessons for many years, and even gave lessons to beginners. I hardly play any more — usually only at Christmas….life just gets in the way sometimes.

  5. I’ve been thinking of taking piano lessons. We have a piano that my in-laws gave us and it seems silly that it sits there with no one playing it. It sounds like a relaxing hobby. 🙂

I’m stopping by simply to say thank you for all you do to share books with others. It’s important what bloggers do and so… thank you for your hard work!

  8. I love the piano! I was a music major in university and have some CDs available for purchase. However, in university and prior to university, I could read music quite well, though I never was a great sight reader. I’m very good playing by ear and love to transcribe music. A friend of mine always tells me that she wonders how I managed to graduate in music with honours whenever she watches me try to sightread … it’s painful.

I don’t have a lot of readers in my life. My mom would reread the same books over and over, and my best girlfriend is pretty busy and doesn’t have a lot of time to read — though she does read a lot of the same books as I do. The blogging community has been great! It’s awesome to find likeminded individuals to gush about books with. 🙂

    Have fun at the conference!

I love the name Koda for a dog. One of my dogs is named Dakota and we often call him ‘Koda’ for short.

I’ve always wished I could play the piano. It seems so relaxing. That must be wonderful for you.

I hope you have a great time at BEA! 🙂

Ready Player One is on my TBR . . . I look forward to reading it. And I’ll have to check out your YA recommendations as I’m trying to read more YA titles. I imagine being a audiobook fan + YA fan, you’ve seen this about the free YA titles (from Audiobooksync), but I thought that was great and can’t wait to check out some books that way : http://bit.ly/K7WuPJ

Woo hoo! Ready Player One love. One of my faves of 2011.

I’m so excited that Redshirts comes out tomorrow with Wil Wheaton reading. Definitely one of my favorite narrators.

If you run into any of my favorite narrators, feel free to stalk them for me. Have fun! Will be checking for you reports!

Oh my gosh! Will Wheaton does sound like the perfect narrator for that book. I normally don’t listen to audiobooks because I have a hard time following, but I may just pick this one up, lol!

And, I’m the same way with playing the piano. I love to play just for me, but I hate playing in front of people. I especially hate playing while people sing which I’ve had to do with my church choir a few times. Talk about stressful!

I’m much the same way when it comes to playing my guitar as you are to the piano – it’s something that’s just for me (though I also want to spare people’s ears haha!) Looking forward to the rest of Armchair BEA with you and all the other book bloggers =)

Awww!! I love the piano!! I actually never played, but I really like it 🙂 Last time at the University we had a course in a class where there was a piano. And my friend can play and we sat together and he showed me which buttons I needed to push and we played together and it was amazing 🙂 I kind of sucked at it, but the experience was overhelming 🙂 🙂 (maybe because of him and not the piano itself :P) Dunno 🙂 But I cherish this memory very much 🙂 Playing music is like magic 🙂 Great introduction post!! 🙂

Ah, I’m so jealous that you’re there! Wish I was!

I’m with you about the drama. I love the book blogging community, but sometimes it seems like people want to make a huge dramatic event out of the tiniest little thing and then it just goes on and on. I could totally do without that. I’d rather find my drama in books not book blogs! 😉

The people in the blogging world are fabulous and I’m so glad to be part of it.

  29. I always dreamed of learning to play piano. I am terrible at reading sheet music and in classes for any music I just memorized the notes I had to play in what order and played from that memory because I couldn’t read the sheet music. LOL
