My Favorite Reads of 2012 (So Far!)
by K.C. Neal
This year I have been very, very choosy about the books I read. And it’s not for the usual reasons like time constraints or limited book budget. No, it seems my attention span is regressing, or going through a midlife crisis, or… I don’t know what it is, but these days it takes a lot to hold my attention! Here are some of the books, in no particular order, that have kept me rapt this year:
Unearthly and Hallowed by Cynthia Hand. Beautiful writing, memorable characters, and an angel story that actually feels fresh. Oh! And I got signed copies of Unearthly and Hallowed when Ms. Hand came through Boise early this year. : )
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater. This author just has a certain charm in her writing. Everything I’ve read by her is memorable, magical, and has an evocative undercurrent of violence. This book is no exception – a really beautiful read.
Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi. I just loved the way worlds collide in this story. And the cover is one of my all-time favorites. I really need to get to the next book in the series – must see what becomes of Aria and Perry!
Wool (all of them!) by Hugh Howey; I,Zombie by Hugh Howey. The Wool books are in my all-time Top 10 (not sure what they bumped out, but something got demoted!).Phenomenal writing and storytelling. Everyone who likes sci-fi, or just a great story, should check these out. I, Zombie is a very heavy and graphic read, but absolutely worth it – the writing is brilliant and the stories have such depth, which makes them so haunting. This one stuck with me in unexpected ways.
Containment by Christian Cantrell. This is a classic sci-fi story in the best sense. I loved the science and technology, the little world-building details, and the plot twists.
You can see there’s an obvious split in my list between YA and sci-fi. That’s no accident – I’ve always loved sci-fi, and I’ve been toying with a sci-fi story idea for a few years, long before I came up with the idea for Pyxis. If all goes well, I’ll be releasing a YA sci-fi book in 2013, before Book 3 in the Pyxis series. 😉
About the author:
Most of K.C. Neal’s days are filled with some combination of writing, reading, gardening, working, and watching stuff on Netflix with her husband and their maltipoo, Oscar. She has an irrational fixation with L.A., and during occasional trips there she pretends her life is more glamorous than it really is (“Entourage” is her guilty pleasure). She likes to surf and hang out on sandy beaches, especially where drinks are served adorned with tiny umbrellas.
