Hi peeps, Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday, whatever you celebrate, and I wish you great things to come in 2013. I hope this is YOUR year. I don’t know about you, but I’m sure as heck going to try and make 2013 MY year. 🙂

I’ve been MIA for the past week, and though at first I was going to apologize for my absence and the lack of posts… I’m not going to. I spent the last week visiting my family and reconnecting with my loved ones. There was no time for drafting posts (though I wish I had time to schedule a few in advance before the holidays), or commenting, or hanging out on Twitter. I didn’t even have time to read! I ended up cutting my tether to the internet and I’m not sure if it’s good, or bad, to admit that I didn’t miss it!

Blogging for me, is basically like a second job (I know I’m not alone in this) that I don’t get paid for. Sometimes it really feels like a job. It’s a commitment, it takes work, and hours out of my days. But blogging is a job that I love. I felt really bad last week for not having posts up each day, for skipping a meme, and for not doing more top 10 posts. Having distance from blogging, even for a week, gave me some perspective. I realized that I need to remember why I started this blog in the first place — which was simply to share my love for books with others. I didn’t start this blog with the intention of posting every day or to blog for someone else. I needed to be reminded that I do this because I love it.

Don’t worry, I don’t expect any big changes for A Book and a Latte in 2013, but I do plan to be easier on myself. That guilt I always feel for being a slacker blogger? I’m kicking it to the curb. This is my slice of the internet after all, and I can blog if, and when and what, I want to!

Recently I’ve been thinking about writing more personal posts about non-book related things, though I’m not sure if you, my readers would care to read about random things going on in my life, or my other interests (let me know your thoughts on this in the comments!). Sometimes I think of starting a new blog, or resurrecting an old personal one I used to have. I’d like to post about my travels, hikes, crafts I attempt (I’m knitting a scarf right now that has beginner written all over it), and my cooking fiascos… but then I think on this and realize that’d just be MORE time spent blogging, which takes time away from the things I enjoy to do (reading included). *sigh*

Wow, this post turned into a long ramble I hadn’t intended. Whoops! Any how…

Here’s to a new year, full of new possibilities!Jen

  1. I like doing my Sunday post for Clock Rewinders where I can add in a few personal things …. and I was totally like you, overworking myself on my blog and it really bummed me out! This year I plan to take it easier, too. I hope you have a great 2013!

Yes! When I started adding up all the hours and stress (self-induced) for my blog, that’s supposed to be fun… it really bummed me out. For 2013, I’m going to take it easier and blog when I WANT to. Not because I feel obligated. I just needed to remind myself that I blog for ME. Thanks, and cheers for a fantastic 2013!

I like personal photos and things. Especially when bloggers post amusing stories, big news, awesome photos. I get curious what everyone looks like, you know?

I know what you mean about blogger guilt and it feeling like a job. But you’re so right, it’s your personal space, so do what you want with it, when you want to! Happy new year, I hope it’s a good one xx

Great post! You touched on some truths that are important to remember. This past year I had to choose to stop participating in specific memes bc of the time it took and the fact that I became a tiny bit obsessive with them. It’s so good to have the reminder that it is okay to miss a meme or not have a post for a few days. I do love blogging and plan on sticking with it for a while but it’s good to remember to keep first things first. 🙂 So thanks for the good post 🙂

  5. I’d love for you to post some more personal things! For some reason, I just kind of like getting to know the bloggers better, and I think it would be great for you to post non book related stuff. 🙂

I actually decided the other day that I need to post more personal stuff myself. I love getting to know the people behind the blogs I follow, so I say post everything here. No need to create a new blog and add new stress when most people would like the glimpse into your “non-bookish” life 🙂
