I’m so excited to have Dawn Metcalf as a guest on A Book and a Latte today! She stopped by for an interview as part of her INVISIBLE Blog Tour, so check out her Q&A below and be sure to enter the giveaway!
Indelible.
And they cannot be changed back.
Joy Malone learns this the night she sees a stranger with all-black eyes across a crowded room—right before the mystery boy tries to cut out her eye.
Instead, the wound accidentally marks her as property of Indelible Ink, and this dangerous mistake thrusts Joy into an incomprehensible world—a world of monsters at the window, glowing girls on the doorstep and a life that will never be the same.
Now Joy must pretend to be Ink’s chosen one—his helper, his love, his somethingfor the foreseeable future and failure to be convincing means a painful death for them both. Swept into a world of monsters, illusion, immortal honor and revenge, Joy discovers that sometimes there are no mistakes.
Some things lie beneath the surface.
Invisible.
With the power to change everything.
Joy Malone wants it all—power, freedom and the boyfriend who loves her. Yet when an unstoppable assassin is hired to kill her, Joy learns that being the girl with the Sight comes with a price that might be too high to pay. Love will be tested, lives will be threatened, and everyone Joy knows and cares about will be affected by her decision to stand by Ink or to leave the Twixt forever.
Her choice is balanced on a scalpel’s edge and the consequences will be more life-altering than anyone can guess.

Q&A with Dawn Metcalf
What has been your favorite part of writing The Twixt series?
This is my first time writing a series so I’ve really enjoyed spinning out the arcs of my character’s stories as far as they could go—it was almost like writing my own fanfic! What if Joy had to choose X or Y? What if Ink felt disillusioned, vengeful, crushed? What is Stef suddenly showed up here? What if Monica needed a friend right now? And, best yet, what would happen if one of your friends turned out to be someone you never suspected could do such a thing…?
I have absolutely adored learning more about each of my favorite characters as they continued to live beyond book one (and two)!
DREAM CAST: Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character(s) from INVISIBLE (or the series)?
I’d need a time machine, but if I could get Johnny Depp to play Ink, my day would be MADE! (The film to be directed by Guillermo del Toro or Tim Burton, an animated adaptation by Hayao Miyazaki—heck, I can dream!) I don’t really have a Joy—maybe Ellen Page?—and Inq’s “look” is right out of 80’s Joan Jett, but I’ve yet to see an actress bring on that much raw “WHOA!” in a while.
Please remember: I am old.
A more modern cast might be Reese Carvey as Ink, Zoey Deutch as Joy, Oluchi Onweagba as Monica Reid, and possibly Victoria Justice as Inq. (And I betcha Bonnie Wright could pull off a mean Filly!) A lot of my creatures I see as CGI characters whose voices influence what they look like. Imagine model Liya Kebede as Aniseed, Ben Kingsley as Sol Leander, and Graus Claude would have to be the incomparable James Earl Jones.
Can you tell I’ve thought a lot about this? Honestly, I’m a sucker for voices far more than pretty faces. I chalk this up to a bizarre set of sensory challenges I had growing up.
Do you have a theme song for INVISIBLE? Or how about Ink and Joy?
Um…no. Actually, I think I’m one of the few people on the planet who really doesn’t listen to music. I don’t drive with music, I don’t write with music, and I don’t listen to music while I work out. I love to dance and sing and go to concerts, but my day-to-day is filled with noise so I embrace the silence in order to listen to the stories spinning in my head. I’m open to suggestions, though!
In fact, if anyone wants to add to my Reader’s Playlist, just shoot me an email via my website, www.dawnmetcalf.com, and I’ll reply with a thank you prize!
What is an unknown fact about INVISIBLE?
Originally, the book started with Joy at work in Antoine’s Café deep in a day of waitressing hell. (This chapter was later cut from the book in its entirety.) I was proud of the fact that I had to do no research for writing that scene. None. I had been a waitress every summer and break through high school and college and then full-time after college for many, many years. I knew this scene back and forth and wanted readers to not only sympathize with Joy, but with all the other servers out there in the world. In fact, the only way I was saved from doing double-shifts at two different Italian restaurants back in Chicago was getting accepted to Harvard. (P.S. I went!)
Is there anything you’ve had to research for The Twixt series that you think the government has flagged you for?
Nnnnnno. *looks for phone taps and hidden cameras* Um, next question!
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received regarding writing?
Oh, there’s a lot of great advice, but here are my Top 3:
“Butt In Chair” – Jane Yolen
“Give yourself permission to suck.” – Jackson Pearce
“Don’t forget to be awesome!” – John Green
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
Yes! Read my books. If you love them, tell your best friend, tell your library, leave a review on Amazon or Goodreads or your blog—tell the world! If you don’t like them, then we can keep it a secret just between you and me. 😉
About Dawn Metcalf

The role of Dawn Metcalf will be played by the tall brunette in the off-the-shoulder, floor-length leather straitjacket. Makeup by Clinique, buckles by Jada Pinkett Smith, hair by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
I have no good excuse for the way I write. I lived in a normal, loving suburban home, studied hard, went to college, went to graduate school, got married, had babies and settled down in northern Connecticut. Despite this wholesome lifestyle, I’ve been clearly corrupted by fairy tales, puppet visionaries, British humor and graphic novels. As a result, I write dark, quirky and sometimes humorous speculative fiction.
