The Selection series is a total guilty pleasure for me! I get the same feeling while reading this as I do when I watch reality TV, or read a mass-market romance novel. And I totally mean this in a good way!
I enjoyed The Elite even more than the first book, and I don’t say that often about sequels. Yes, there was even more romance triangle drama in it, which I was worried about, but I liked how America handled it. Though she’s really torn between Maxon and Aspen, she compared all the aspects of her decision, and thought through how each will impact her life. There’s also more politics in this installment, and action as the rebel attacks become more frequent.
My favorite relationship in The Elite is between America and her father. I loved seeing them interact, which isn’t often, but their strong relationship is nice to see in YA… I just love her Dad! I also liked seeing the dynamics between all the Elite girls still living at the Castle.
I listened to the audiobook, and sadly for me, the narrator did not work for me. Though it didn’t keep me from enjoying the story, the author’s voice grated on my nerves. I thought America sounded like an airhead, and I don’t consider her one at all…
Fans of Kiera Cass’s debut, The Selection, will not be disappointed with The Elite! I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a fun read, romance, and doesn’t mind a light dystopian. I’m really looking forward the series conclusion, The One, which releases in spring 2014.
