Winning what you want may cost you everything you love.
As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions.
One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin.
But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.
Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.
I read this book (in practically one sitting) back in September, and absolutely fell in love with it. The Winner’s Curse blew me away, and was my favorite read of 2014, along with The Winner’s Crime! Life happened, so I’m not posting my review until now, but I’ve told everyone I know to read it. Every time a friend asks for a recommendation (I love being that person in my friends’ lives!), it’s the first one I list, and I practically scream it at them. Haha!
I can’t remember the last time I was so emotionally invested in a story and its characters. The Winner’s Curse, and its sequel, are beautifully written and well crafted. Marie Rutkoski gives so much depth to Kestrel and Arin, from their backgrounds to their emotions. I just love them together, and my heart twisted and shredded to see their complicated story unfold. Marie delivers each side of the story so well in their dual perspectives, that it was impossible to choose a side – both are right and wrong. I eventually had to put my faith in the author and simply root for them to find a way, even though it seems impossible.
This book made me cry, it made me angry, it made me ache… I loved it so much and I’m desperately waiting for the third and final book in this trilogy! If you love romance, adventure, and political intrigue, then this is a MUST READ for you! If you haven’t read it yet, go grab it so we can fangirl together!
I was thrilled to be asked to participate in the “What’s Your Winner’s Curse” blog tour to help celebrate The Winner’s Trilogy! We were asked to answer this question:
The ‘Winner’s Curse’ is an economics term that means you’ve gotten what you wanted – but at too high a price. What would you pay too much for?
I was sent the question over a month ago so I figured I’d have plenty of time to contemplate it and figure out my answer… and I’m still sitting here stumped! I believe I’d pay anything for love and/or to protect my family, yet I’m such a logical and rational thinker that I don’t think I’d pay too much for it… at least not in the sense that’s portrayed in the book. Not very exciting, huh? So what would YOU pay too high of a price for?
The Winner’s Crime
by Marie Rutkowski
Expected Publication: March 3, 2015
Book two of the dazzling Winner’s Trilogy is a fight to the death as Kestrel risks betrayal of country for love.
The engagement of Lady Kestrel to Valoria’s crown prince means one celebration after another. But to Kestrel it means living in a cage of her own making. As the wedding approaches, she aches to tell Arin the truth about her engagement…if she could only trust him. Yet can she even trust herself? For—unknown to Arin—Kestrel is becoming a skilled practitioner of deceit: an anonymous spy passing information to Herran, and close to uncovering a shocking secret.
As Arin enlists dangerous allies in the struggle to keep his country’s freedom, he can’t fight the suspicion that Kestrel knows more than she shows. In the end, it might not be a dagger in the dark that cuts him open, but the truth. And when that happens, Kestrel and Arin learn just how much their crimes will cost them.

I’m really quite frugal so this is difficult. Oh, my car. I want to make sure to have something that will hold up and be reliable.
I’m not old enough to own my own place yet, I think, but I would pay a good price if the place I wanted was a great deal and it had no bad history or even things I’d have to reconstruct. On TV it looks fun, but I don’t think that’s for me. Unless those things I have to fix are minor problems. Huge problems are bad. Definitely a no-no. 🙂
Thanks for the giveaway! I think I would pay anything for someone I love. 🙂
food
I’d pay too high a price to get my health back.
I would pay too much for a great dark chocolate or on travel expenses.
I would pay to high a price for traveling. I dream of backpacking across Europe and Australia/ New Zealand. Thank you for this amazing chance. I’m looking forward to The Winner’s Crime! 🙂
Right now I’d pay too high of a price to go to Hawaii and lay out on the beaches while swimming and then reading my books all day. The sound of the waves in the background with plenty of lounging time is exactly what I need right now in the middle of winter.
Junk food! Esp macaroons, they are so expensive yet so good!
